As he pondered as a young adult, soon to be a father of his own child, he found himself drifting further and further into a state of being half awake and half asleep. Then, suddenly, he was standing back in the main room.
Except this time, he wasn't listening to the usual quiet chatter of the chipmunks quibbling over which one has to go collect the seeds and nuts for the day's meals. The birds in the trees had stopped providing the background music Adam had grown accustomed to as he was outside in the garden. The small creek, a stone's throw from the house, stopped flowing as if some higher power had paused it. What was happening?
Adam could hear small murmurs around him, but nobody else was home. His mother was out gathering fruits and vegetables from the garden to make a midday snack for the both of them. Adam’s fiancé was with her family, preparing for the festivities in a few moons.
What was making that sound? Adam started to walk toward the door to see if someone was in the garden talking with his mother but could not move his feet. He looked down to the surprise that he didn't have feet. At least, what should have been his feet were the same as the boards he stood on. He should have been scared because this didn't feel like a dream, and he knew that he couldn't meld with the floorboards over the past few seconds randomly. He tried imagining that he could float over to the bedroom door since that is how he would move in his dreams where he felt stapled to the floor. That didn't work either.
"What is going on?" He wondered out loud.
